Trustees

Here you can read a little about the trustees of Serian UK.

None of the trustees are paid for the work they do for the charity, and neither do they claim any expenses.

They all work to promote interest in and raise funds for the charity, and you can be assured that every penny which is raised on behalf of Serian UK is spent with care on the project activities described within these pages – not on unnecessary overheads or ‘administration’.

Bob Webzell

Trustee & Secretary

Bob Webzell has been UK Co-ordinator of Aang Serian since 2001, and served as Secretary of Serian UK since its establishment in 2005. Bob lives in Brighton, UK, with his wife, Sandra.

Bob is a retired lecturer, formerly Senior Lecturer in Health Studies at Thames Valley University in London. He has a Masters degree in Management and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is also an External

Examiner for three other English universities, covering the subjects of Mental Health and Health Care Management.

Bob is a skilled photographer, an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and a Past President of Brighton and Hove Camera Club. Bob achieves most of his fundraising for Serian UK via photographic exhibitions and illustrated lecturing, using images taken in Eluwai and the Monduli Mountains.

When he has the opportunity to visit Noonkodin School, he provides students with disposable cameras and the necessary teaching to record their own lives and culture. Students’ images, such as this one taken by former pupil Paulo Emmanuel (whom Bob sponsored), are often reproduced in his exhibitions and lectures to inform UK audiences, and all proceeds go direct to the charity.

Dave McEwen

Trustee & Treasurer

Dave McEwen was invited to become a trustee of Serian UK in May 2012, taking over as treasurer from Peter Burford for health reasons.  Peter  will be a hard act to follow. Dave has already been impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm of the other trustees and hopes that he will be able to make a useful contribution.

Dave is coming towards the end of his career as an Independent Financial  Adviser. For 26 years before changing careers he worked as a teacher in both primary and secondary sectors. His last years in education were as Head of Maths in a local comprehensive.

Environmental issues have always been a passion since doing an MSc in Environmental Pollution in 1972. Dave was one of the founder members of the Henley in Transition group. Another passion, shared with his wife Sally, is their allotment where they try to ‘grow their own’ as far as possible. The practicalities of ‘promoting education for sustainable ways of living’ is a challenge that he looks forward to addressing.

Dave loved Tanzania when he visited the south of the country on holiday several years ago.   He hopes to visit Noonkodin at some stage but in the meantime he will devote his energies to fund-raising and trying to broaden the Serian UK support base.

As a Trustee of Serian UK, Janine FitzGerald has been the link between the students at Noonkodin School and their sponsors, and she has also been the Chair of Serian UK since 2005.

Janine’s broad experience has been gained from several years in local politics, duties as a Magistrate, teaching in a Young Offenders Institution and a variety of voluntary ‘stuff’ both in the UK and overseas.

A BSc in Anthropology with Education, followed by a Master’s degree in Humanitarian Development Practice has fuelled Janine’s interest in the cultural effects of education.
She is presently seeking opportunities for further academic research in a related area.

During the next year Janine is hoping to track down some of the past students who completed secondary education at Noonkodin to find out where they are now.
