About Us

Serian UK is a Registered Charity (No. 1111711) recognised by the Charity Commission of England and Wales. Our aim is to promote education for sustainable ways of living.

Serian means ‘peace’ in the Maasai language, representing our philosophy that sustainable development means peaceful co-existence with one another and with the environment.

Since 2005, Serian UK has supported Noonkodin Secondary School, a unique school located in the remote Maasai village of Eluwai. Noonkodin provides around 200 students aged 14-25+ with an education that brings together indigenous and Western knowledge, skills and teaching methods.

We are proud of our track record of NO OVERHEADS for five years from 2005-2010, no UK administration costs, and no ‘hidden’ expenditures. Every penny donated, apart from bank charges, has been used directly to support the projects in Tanzania*.

This is thanks to the generosity of our Trustees, who work from home and have covered postage, transport, website hosting costs and other expenses out of their own pockets. (More recently, thanks to Blue Doodle Design too for donating their time to design this new site!)

* Up until now, we’ve even avoided joining JustGiving.com, because it charges a monthly subscription. We prefer www.everyclick.com, which works in the same way but doesn’t charge the charities anything. But as people keep telling us they prefer JustGiving because it’s more widely known and trusted, we’re giving in, at least temporarily!
